Help! My Car’s Check Engine Light Is On!

Many people believe that the check engine light is the sign of death. This isn’t necessarily true, but you should be concerned if your car’s check engine light comes on because this light is very accurate at detecting engine problems. Integrity Auto Repair can get to the bottom of the reason why your check engine light is on, and, better yet, we can fix it. Here are common reasons why the check engine light is illuminated on the dashboard.

Damaged Catalytic Converter

If your catalytic converter is clogged or damaged, your check engine light will come on and your engine will most likely overheat. This is because you have too much carbon monoxide in your exhaust. It is the catalytic converter that converts this into carbon dioxide.

Electrical System/Sensor Problems

Oftentimes, the check engine light will come on if your vehicle has an electrical system or sensor problem. This includes an issue with your vehicle’s main computer chip. Unfortunately, the light will not turn off until such time as you get the sensor replaced.

Fuel System Issues

One simple reason why your check engine light comes on is a loose gas cap. This cap is responsible for sealing off the gas tank so fuel does not evaporate out of it. You may also end up with the check engine warning if the amount of fuel being pushed into the engine is incorrect.

Faulty Mass Airflow Sensor

The mass airflow sensor keeps track of the air flowing into the engine. It is also called the MAF sensor, and when it goes bad, which is rare, your check engine light will come on. Replacing the MAF sensor solves the problem.

Faulty Oxygen Sensor

The oxygen sensor has a lifespan of 50,000 miles to 100,000 miles. This sensor is also called the O2 sensor, and it will send your vehicle’s main computer chip an error code if it is malfunctioning. As with the mass airflow sensor, you need to replace the O2 sensor in order to correct the problem.

Worn Spark Plugs

Your spark plugs can also trigger a check engine warning if they are worn and misfiring. The problem can lie with the spark plugs themselves or the plug wires. You may also notice that your engine stutters while you are driving and sitting at an idle, and this can also be a sign of a vacuum leak.

Bad Transmission

Finally, the check engine light will turn on if your transmission is going bad. Aside from the check engine warning, you will also have problems with your vehicle shifting gears, going into gear, and staying in gear.
