Your Summer Road Trip Is Just a Plan Away

Has COVID-19 spoiled your summer vacation plans? You’re not alone. You might not feel comfortable flying, taking a bus, or the train to your summer destination, but you can still drive, provided the destination is open. Maybe you don’t want to head to Vegas or Tahoe until things settle down, but how about a road trip the whole family will enjoy? National parks and scenic routes are slowly reopening, and if you plan your road trip carefully, everyone will have a good time during summer vacation.

Gather Everyone to Make Your Plans

Gather everyone who is going on the trip with you and make your plans. Whether it’s just you and your partner or you, your spouse, and all the kids, everyone should have a say on your road trip. Decide where you want to go, and then plan your trip on your favorite mapping program. Plan the most direct route and then find alternate routes in the event you get stuck in an unanticipated problem such as inclement weather or road closure. Don’t plan the route with a we’ll-drive-until-we-get-there mentality. Rather, plan with frequent stops in mind that include bathroom breaks, snack breaks, and things to do. For example, if your family wants to do activities along one route, choose that route first.

Plan for Mishaps

Once you have your trip’s itinerary filled with fun stops and activities when you reach your destination, plan for mishaps because they will happen. Make sure you have a first-aid kit in your vehicle and an emergency kit that has supplies, such as bottled water and non-perishable snacks, in case you get stranded along the way. Put a gallon of coolant and a quart of oil in your trunk just in case, and don’t forget the gas can, either. Has your vehicle inspected before your trip to make sure it’s ready for the journey? Things to check include filters, fluids, tires, and wiper blades (if you’re headed somewhere with summer showers). If your vehicle is overdue for preventative maintenance services, get them done before you hit the road. This will prevent you from breaking down while on your trip.
